Links with Forensic Pathways Ltd and PhD Recruitment |

IACFS has established links with a pioneering exploitation company in the West Midlands, Forensic Pathways Ltd. Several meetings have been held with Managing Director, Dr. Richard Leary, M.B.E to explore research collaboration. This has resulted in the company’s part sponsorship of PhD student, Jennifer Thomas who is co-supervised by Professor Hirschfield and Professor Blunt. Jennifer is undertaking research into the impact, on police investigations, of automating the ballistic identification process (i.e. matching bullets to gun barrels) through the application of surface metrology and pattern recognition software. The link with Forensic Pathways has given Jennifer access to contacts and data sets through the Company’s involvement in the Odyssey Project; a major EU-funded initiative seeking to develop common standards for ballistic identification. This is precisely the kind of inter-disciplinary research envisaged by the creation of IACFS.
