Professor Alex Hirschfield

Applied Criminology Centre

Research interests include environmental criminology, situational and technological approaches to crime reduction, urban regeneration, policy evaluation and health impact assessment. Research funding from ESRC (Crime and Social Order Programme), EPSRC (Technologies for Crime Prevention and Detection), and a range of government agencies including the Home Office, Department of Health, Department of Transport, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) and numerous regeneration partnerships. Since 2002 he has served as Home Office Senior Adviser to Government Office North West and until recently was a Knowledge Transfer Champion with the Regional Development Agency, Yorkshire Forward. He was appointed to the Board of the Yorkshire and Humberside Fraud Forum in 2008.

Dr. Roger Jewsbury

Forensic and Analytical Science

Roger Jewsbury is Head of Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences and leads the Centre for Forensic and Analytical Research Centre within IACFS. He is a Fellow Royal Society of Chemistry, Chartered Chemist and a Registered Analytical Chemist.  He has broad interests in Forensic Science and Analytical Chemistry and is currently leading research projects in chemiluminescence and in spectroscopic methods of analysis as well as co-supervising projects in analysis of drugs in water and the lethality of firearms. His research at Huddersfield has mostly involved developing and studying analytical methods to determine trace levels of compounds. He has been an External Examiner at several universities, an Open University Summer School tutor for a number of years and Visiting Professor at the Université Aix-Marseille III for ten years.

Prof Liam Blunt

Centre for Precision Technologies

In 1997 Prof Blunt moved to Huddersfield and began developing the Centre for Precision Technologies. As well as teaching in the area of Materials and Manufacturing processes. During this period the CPT has expanded from three researchers to a thirty strong activity Prof Blunt has formed extensive industrial collaborations in particular with Taylor Hobson Ltd a world leading metrology company. Prof Blunt now holds the Taylor Hobson Chair of Surface Metrology. Prof Blunt is also the Director of Research for the School of Computing and Engineering and is a visiting Professor at 2 Universities.
Written above 150 papers. The centre has a world class reputation in the measurement and interpretation of surfaces at the nanometre and micrometer scale. Additionally the CPT has developed novel instrumentation and software and has recently developed a new system to examine and compare bullets, cartridges and gun parts. The one system is capable of carrying out this work. The work has involved a large number of failure examinations in a number of industrial sectors in addition to the criminal forensic cases including several high profile cases.
